Sandy Knoll is a private residence in Homewood, IL that celebrates the surrounding wooded knoll located 45 minutes from Chicago.

Design

Sandy Knoll is designed to fit its site, a small, steeply sloping and heavily wooded hill with difficult sandy soil conditions. The structure of the home was based on a prefabricated model which allowed the mature trees on the wooded site to remain preserved.

Energy concerns were met, with thermal glass used for the one glass wall and high strip windows elsewhere, and with thick insulation in all the voids.

CONSTRUCTION

Sandy Knoll needed to be built in a three-month time frame. Within this short amount of time, the prefabricated structure of the home had to be erected in one day. The house succeeded in cutting typical red tape and costs of private residences by combining design and contracting with standard, modular products.

Working drawings were produced in a couple of weeks and permits were obtained shortly thereafter. The prefabricated frame was delivered in “steel envelopes,” with floors and ceilings in place, on eleven semi trucks. With the aid of a crane, the frame came together in one day.
