Cloud Chaser
Cloud Chaser is a glass-and-steel structured private residence located in a gated residential community at the foothills of Tonto National Forest in Scottsdale, Arizona.
Design
A steel frame creates large, open spaces minimally enclosed with large expanses of glass. Steel was the ideal structural material for the harsh desert climate, offering timeless durability. The framelessly mounted, UV-treated glass provides protection from the elements and showcases the natural beauty of the area. Other materials and finishes, including the natural stone and sandblasted colored concrete masonry exterior, were selected to blend into the desert landscape.
The design planning was influenced by historic Native American homes. The house entry begins at the high point of the steep ravine site, with a path along the reflecting pool leading to the front door, employing the concept of the Native American courtyard.
The courtyard also offers protection from the extreme desert climate, made to create shade through features like large overhanging canopies. A varied roofline follows the surrounding topography; rather than a single imposing mass, the roof is a series of horizontal planes, a solution dictated by the functional requirements of the site and building.

The home offers a seamless transparency between indoors and outdoors. The house expands from its interior and semi-enclosed spaces outward, to the bi-level courtyard and sundeck. Beyond, the negative-edge pool further extends the line of vision.
Each level of the home provides a different experience of the landscape. From the main level, the house features expansive views of Pinnacle Peak, a nearby mountain. On the lower level, rocks, vegetation, sand and stone are incorporated in the terrace and all seen up close. The lower, terraced level of the house accommodates the guesthouse, guest rooms and recreational areas.
Elegant bamboo floors and Douglas fir ceilings bring warmth and natural beauty to the interior. The dramatic 63-foot main living room and expansive master suite with sitting room create spacious, inviting environments on the first level.
