Arizona Courtyard House
Located near Scottsdale, the Arizona Courtyard House is a private residence built utilizing the Optima DCHGlobal modular housing system. The Arizona Courtyard House further develops the sustainable building system, demonstrating a flexibility to create a home of linear volumes. The site is strategically arranged to define a private courtyard, with the main house to the south and east, a fitness center and lap pool to the north, and serene mountain views to the west.
Design
The house is a pavilion, constructed with a system of standardized steel structural components and set on a base of concrete risen above terrain level. Based on a modular system with spaced columns, the house features an open floor plan.
The project includes Corten steel for its sustainable characteristics and aesthetics, as its weathering steel is complementary to the colors of the desert. The Corten structural components are left open to view, creating a pleasing contrast to the highly polished concrete floor throughout the house. The grid of beams overhead defines the ceiling inside and flows beyond the glass enclosure to outdoor rooms in the courtyard, interconnecting inside and out. Roof panels of Corten were detailed with perforations where possible to allow filtered daylight from the desert sun to reach the courtyard below.

The exterior enclosure of the house is made of glass, with perforated sunscreens and press-formed louvers layered in front of the glass where shade or privacy is needed. The result is a sense of daylight within all interior spaces and a rich texture of shades and shadows on the exterior.
Interior material finishes were carefully selected to warmth of the environment, including extensive millwork of natural cherry, European oak and walnut. Luxurious area rugs adorn the polished concrete floor, along with a unique application of red MMA floor mats used at circulation areas. Draperies with high translucency create zones of privacy while still allowing filtered light and views to the private courtyard and mountains beyond.
CONSTRUCTION
Utilizing the modular housing system, Arizona Courtyard House was built in under five months.
